Psychotherapy for All People
There is an unfortunate misconception out there in the world about psychotherapy and who it is for, and who needs it. Too many people have gotten their understanding about this powerful treatment from television and movies. Before you can understand the benefits of this type of treatment, you need a clear understanding of what this treatment is.
Defining Psychotherapy
There are two ways to treat mental disorders; one is by medical means like medications, or by psychological means like therapy. Psychotherapy treats different mental disorders by using psychological methods. It is simply talk therapy, and teaching patients how to deal with their emotions; bad and good.
Methods
There are many different methods a trained psychotherapist can use, and you can relax none of them include a lobotomy or electric shock therapy. They do include however you being open and honest with your therapist and yourself.
- Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) – This form of psychotherapy combines various forms of therapy disciplines and uses them to explore the way a person is processing their in-depth feelings, difficult emotions, and deep rooted relational experiences.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) – This therapy is focused on the connection between a patients emotions and the animalistic need to have emotional connections. People who struggle with these connections seek treatment to strengthen how they relate to themselves and the world through their emotions.
- Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) – CBT is one of the most common types of psychotherapy. It helps people to identify thinking and behavior patterns that are deemed harmful, negative, or ineffective and helps them to change and replace those thoughts and behaviors with more functional and accurate behaviors and thoughts respectively.
There is no one group of people, or age group, or specific mental disorder who should seek psychotherapy. If you or a loved one are struggling mentally and need someone to talk through your difficulties with, then psychotherapy may be the answer for you.
